Facebook’s chat feature is normally used from the Facebook website, but you can also use Facebook chat from within a variety of instant messaging programs. Facebook’s chat uses the standard XMPP, also known as Jabber protocol, and any IM client that supports XMPP can connect to Facebook.

1. Launch your IM client and select the “Add Account” option to add a new account.

2. Select “XMPP” or “Jabber” as the protocol type.

3. Type “chat.facebook.com” (omit quotes here and throughout) into the “Domain” or “Server” box.

4. Type your Facebook username, followed by “@chat.facebook.com”, into the “Username” box. For example, if your Facebook URL is “facebook.com/example”, type “example@chat.facebook.com” into the box.
